It would be a bit more believable if error correction went in both directions. A warming trend is believable (and in fact is clearly true over the longer run), but even with such a trend your going to have some old reading that when carefully analyzed were actually too cool and some new ones that when carefully analyzed are shown to give a figure that's too warm to accurately reflect reality.
