>>As I recall, it was a Soviet Geologist...<<

No, Ken, the gentleman has been described as having worked for a total of 24 years in both the Ministry of Geology and Ministry of Oil.

He is also described as the "Almaty Geophysicist" Nurlan Tsatarovitch Dzhanseitov. As I stated in an earlier post, this individual claims that there were 15 wells drilled and the Soviets left for the Aktubinsk field. He also claims that the Begesh well created the huge and emabarassing oil spil. He also made claims that he knew there were large deposits of oil in what is now aipn's concession.

Now lets look at this carefully...this man said he knew about the oil being there for a long time...he was the head of Dank Too and got the exploration license from the Kasak Government for this area. But what did he do? He sold off 90% of his rights to MED. But remember, he "knows" there are potentially billions (well 340 million metric tons in his own words) of barrels and still sells 90% for a song. Sorry, Ken, but I will not accept this as reasonable. I find real problems with this. You know that there is that much oil and sell off the vast majority for a few million dollars? Okay, he is still in the game for a small percentage, but he had rights to the entire area!

And you ask me: "Why be suspicious?"

>>I don't think those were the exact words Faris used.<<

That was exactly the word he used. "Corrupt" He also made several long posts on how the only way to be safe with signing a contract with Kasakhstan was for there to be representatives of the Gov involved with the company. That is what Faris said. The Kasaks can't be trusted except in aipn's situation. I sure do have problems with that. And then considering that the Kasak gov has renigged on contracts recently with foreign companies--the canadian situation comes mind--it does make me concerned, Ken.

I also don't buy into the patriotic motives that you are tagging the Kaz Gov officials with. Since I have no idea what there true motives are I'll stay completely neutral on that. It is impossible to compare the U.S. to Kasak. We are a developed country with a monster economy--and yes, we have poor and homeless in abundance. But Kasakhstan is another world entirely. The Soviet Union was as corrupt as it gets. There are still strong remnants of that now dead and corrupt monster sitting in key positions in Kasaks gov. I do not discount in any way that Russia still has some influence.

So you accuse me of putting a negative slant on all of this? I would say an extremely cautious slant is more appropriate. These are real problems, Ken, and attempting to spin doctor them doesn't work.

Greg
