While Herzen joked that he must seem like a ‘banker’ himself, he was simultaneously disdainful of Rothschild and in awe of him. Buying real estate in Paris in addition to investing in Rothschild's railways, and through him bonds of the United States and some of the individual states and the obligations of other nations.
