Trump resists temptation to sack Comey 2 Power Line by Paul Mirengoff I’m a bit surprised that President Trump has decided to retain James Comey as FBI Director. Comey, independent and stubborn as hell, has been a thorn in the side of the last two presidents. Trump’s presidency is likely to be at least as bumpy as his immediate predecessors’. Thus, from his perspective, Comey is hardly the ideal Director. Now would have been the perfect time to sack Comey. The Democrats, who blame Hillary Clinton’s defeat on him (along with Vladimir Putin), wouldn’t have squawked. If Trump fires Comey down the road, when he’s in the middle of investigating this or that Trump scandal, they will squawk vociferously and possibly to good effect. I’m not saying that firing Comey would have been the right thing to do. If the Director is doing a good job and has the confidence of the agents, then keeping him was the proper move. Therefore, it is probably to Trump’s credit that he decided to do it.
