The way I see it, all that FBI Director Comey needs to do, and to be expected to do, is HIS JOB, to the best of his ability and according to the requirements of his position.

If he does that then I see no reason why a President should consider firing him.

However, should he step outside the bounds of his office and gets involved in playing "politics", or the like, then surely that's the time to replace him.

If he saw fit, at the time, to comment about investigation into Hillary Clinton, and that was in accordance with investigative protocol, then that's what the man was perfectly entitled to do. The same could be said had there been reason for the FBI Director to investigate Donald Trump and to comment on it if it was within the parameters of his office.

And if either candidate didn't like it, ... then tough.

An FBI Director shouldn't have to put his wet finger into the "political wind" in order to find out which way it's blowing .......
