It may seem strange at first to think of Trump’s golf courses as part of the global trading system, because the courses don’t go anywhere; the golfers come to them. But the numbers are big, huge even: Travel and tourism is by far the largest category of U.S. services exports at more than $200 billion a year, contributing about a third of the annual $260 billion surplus in U.S. services.

President Trump obviously knows a lot about the golf industry. If he thinks owning a couple of golf courses in Scotland is good business, who am I to judge? I just don’t want him to claim that he’s putting America first with his foreign business dealings.

Trump’s businesses are global, and when it comes to business, Trump doesn’t put America first. And other American businesses won’t either, no matter how much he shames or bullies them. Business is business.
