MHI Vestas Offshore Wind Unveils 9 MW Giant

Posted by Betsy Lillian on January 26, 2017

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind has unveiled its uprated 8 MW wind turbine, which will be able to reach 9 MW of power at specific site conditions.

The company says its prototype, set up at the Osterild Wind Turbine Test Field in Denmark, broke the energy generation record for a commercially available offshore wind turbine on Dec. 1: Over a 24-hour period, it produced approximately 216,000 kWh.

The new turbine is based on the V164-8.0 MW, a machine already installed at the 258 MW Burbo Bank Extension. This turbine also has a firm order book of over 1.6 GW, says MHI Vestas.

“We are confident that the 9 MW machine has now proven that it is ready for the market, and we believe that our wind turbine will play an integral part in enabling the offshore industry to continue to drive down the cost of energy,” says Torben Hvid Larsen, chief technology officer of the company.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is a 50/50 joint venture between Vestas Wind Systems and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
