Yeah, protecting the integrity of the democracy is not important.

Really? You think an investigation in some governors race in NC is a representative sample?

It isn't. We should have a proper study to put the matter to rest. Then have a voter ID system that can provide simple assurance. This can be done inexpensively and adequately.

Lane, there is a lot at stake here; we shouldn't minimize it. Some (I) would say it was the razor thin vote margin of 2000 that led us to the division and hate we're seeing today (yes, there have been exacerbating factors). That type of close call today would be a fractious disaster. Is that a risk we really need to take.

Practically every civilized country requires some kind of definitive voter identification. As a systems person yourself, you know that unique identifiers are essential to the system. We have party operatives for one side claiming on videotape that it is easy to defeat the voting laws (which may or may not be true, I don't know).

It seems apparent to me that there are some localities, like downtown Cleveland, where a person can easily vote multiple times if he chooses to do so just by showing up at a polling place with some kind of ID saying, "This is me and I live on that street." And vote.

When there are contentious situations with strong feelings, it is inconceivable to me that it doesn't happen. Whether it happens enough to be a problem is unknown.

But we should not ignore it until it becomes a Constitutional crisis.

That's my argument. Why am I wrong?
