Which is to a large extent besides the point since the 2nd amendment doesn't say "the right of militia members to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" but rather "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"

That is covered by the first part. Namely "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, ".

That sets the context of the right to bear arms. We no longer have "well regulated Militias". Turns out, they didn't really work as a replacement for a standing army. As George Washington argued.
