Sure he could. The NT records him kneeling and writing in the dirt during the incident involving a woman caught in adultery. Another passage records him reading from scripture in a Galilean synagogue. Other passages show him commenting on scripture, quoting it, teaching about it ... all things he couldn't have done without having read it.
