Hi TimF; Re: "But there is nothing imperial about a defensive alliances [NATO] ..."

(1) Imperial: This means having to do with an "empire". An empire is a group of nations ruled by a "
emperor, empress, or other powerful sovereign or government". In this case, the government are the globalists / new world order whose members are the various elite of all major political parties, the ones who were horrified by Brexit and Trump. Or NATO if you prefer.

(2) Defensive: EVERY modern alliance is said to be "defensive". This includes the Warsaw Pact which was a "collective defense treaty". Let's review the history.

The precursor to the Warsaw Pact began when Czechoslovakia, afraid of a rearmed West Germany, sought a security pact with East Germany and Poland. After West Germany was rearmed, the Warsaw Pact was created. In 1954, the USSR asked to have Germany reunited and the USSR to join NATO with all four occupying powers withdrawing from Germany. The other occupying powers, US, UK and France, refused the offer. The Warsaw Pact was created a few days after NATO added West Germany as a member.

(3) "... nothing either imperial or aggressive about letting Russia's neighbors in to NATO."

The problem is that these little countries are neighbors of Russia and they tend to treat their Russian ethnic minorities as trash. Being a member of NATO makes them feel more powerful and more likely to treat the Russians badly. Eventually the Russians and them will get into a fight.

In the case of Ukraine, Kiev was the place where the Russian people began in the Middle Ages. It was part of the Russian Empire for hundreds of years. After the Russian Empire broke up in roughly 1918, various parts were independent but they were reunited into the USSR by around 1921. To get extra votes in the UN, the USSR split Ukraine off and so they became truly independent when the Soviet Union fell in roughly 1991. They had some shaky history and it's said that the CIA helped destabilize the pro Russian government in 2014. Russia took back Crimea which is by far majority Russian ethnicity. This has not been recognized abroad and it's basically a good reason to have a war.

WW1 was caused by ethnic Europeans (Serbs) being mistreated outside their own country.

WW2 was caused by ethnic Europeans (Germans) being mistreated outside their own country.

Do you really think having Ukraine join NATO is a great idea? It's basically WW3 all ready to roll, but with nuclear weapons.

The other countries bordering Russia have similar issues. They DO NOT belong in NATO. And their joining NATO would not be a defensive move. It's a move designed to ring Russia with enemy bases.

Here's Hillary Clinton talking about having Ukraine join NATO, as reported by PBS:
