One merit of living in the back end of nowheresville is that one is more or less automatically ready for anything that may happen. We are on a deep well like you, and have a very complete well water treatment system, which is quite normal round here. It starts with a tower particle filter which back washes every couple of weeks, then a large cartridge filter, and finally a UV sterilizer.

We keep about 20 gallons of water in bags in the basement, plus a carton of bottled water.

Sounds a bit paranoid to people from a big city, I'm sure, but the Province (NB Canada) got hit by a severe ice storm 8 days ago, and several thousand houses are still without power as of last night. This morning's temperature is minus 23, Centigrade. At the worst peak of the storm, about a fifth of the province was affected. My village got off lightly - lots of flickers, but no real power interruptions..

The good news is that the army was called in to help, and the only deaths have been from carbon monoxide poisoning from improper use of cars and generators in attached garages. Neighbouring States and Provinces have lent many crews to help repair the grid, which is standard practice in this area - mutual aid is expected, and happens .

Individual resilience is sensible for us peasants.

Tony.
