The real sin on allowing children of non-English speaking parents to be educated in other than standard English is that it is preparing kids to be part of an underclass.

Similarly allowing children to to use ghetto English in school instead of standard English is also preparing them to be of the underclass.

The world's power language is English. To not speak a competent version of standard English is a huge disadvantage.

An illustration of how important this can be:

One of the reasons Sri Lanka had that awful civil war between the Singalese and Tamils was the majority Singalese tried to arrange national education so that the Singalese would be educated in Singalese and English and Tamils educated in Tamil and Singalese. In other words, to prepare Tamils to be the underclass.

I was there about a year before the war broke out and spoke to quite a number of Tamils and it was clear this educational setup was a very bitter issue.

Shortly after the visit there I was talking with friends and they said they were thinking of buying a vacation place there. And I said, impulsively, and without any prior thought or conclusion, "Don't do that! They're going to have a civil war."

I surprised myself and of course had to explain my outburst. I think it was something I didn't really want to think about. I had immensely enjoyed my visit. The place and people are beautiful.

In this modern era trying to deliberately maintain an underclass is a project that will end badly.

So think about the Democrats and their fight against Mrs. DeVos and what a clever Republican could make of it.
