About 28% of their lumber production is sold into the USA the rest goes abroad. But WEF also has export log sales. That 28% represents around 20% of total sales. In my opinion even if there was a significant tariff it would not curb the whole US sales. Other than the last year there has been some sort of tariff on lumber shipped to the US since the 90's or before. The last agreement negotiated by Harper also had quotas and the company still prospered.

Trump knows boosting lumber prices to high with levies will slow housing which creates a lot of jobs. The US builders association states a $2000 increase in the cost of a home due to higher material costs results in 150,000 cut in people who can qualify for a mortgage.

Secondly the US mills cannot fill market demand. It is claimed they want tariffs because BC's timber is subsidized. But there is a another reason they don't declare. Many of the producers are just far less efficient. They are like WEF was before upgrading their mills. When IFP purchased a southern US lumber company they closed the operation down for a period and spent another $80M to modernize and upgrade the facility. Just like West Fraser did when they bought the Ainsworth Chasm operation.

I remember reading in the forest talk magazine A reprinted article from the southern community of how the workers could hardly believe there could be such a difference. Streamlined, Safer, Increased production with less people.

Presently Institutions hold over 43% of Western shares. All this said there is still no guarantee in any investment. Everything has risk of some sort. But for me it has been a decent place to have some money parked collecting the dividend. I keep increasing my position by buying extra at the lows selling the rises but keeping the profit in shares to collect the div. Sometimes I only gain 30 or so shares other times a few hundred.

Below is a post I made a week or so ago on SH. to someone's viewpoint I did not agree with
