Perhaps I'm not clear about what track you're talking about. You seem a level-headed person. Surely it must be something greater than the aforementioned air-headed student snowflakes and their enabling toadies for you to be so exercised.
There was a lot of chatter a while back about snowflakes and offensive Halloween costumes and yoga being cultural appropriation. I read all of it. I agree with you that colleges seem to have gone wacky. I see two areas of concern. One is free speech. The other is diversity that has gone off the rails, way past equity and on to cultural narcissism. I agree with you that the D's own the problem. I routinely read a number of economic blogs written by academics. As I mentioned before, my sense was that this issue was beginning to turn the corner. A few colleges came out with sensible statements about it. But that movement had barely gotten underway when Trump came along and cut the issue off at the knees. That's most unfortunate.
Newspapers are choosing to downplay...
We have this elephant in the room. The news is utterly overwhelmed by Trump. Newspapers have been struggling for some time now and cutting back. They didn't have enough resources BT, that's Before Trump. They are consumed by Trump. Trump is a disruptive force, both intentionally and unintentionally. Plus he has targeted the media. I acknowledge that some of the media preoccupation is the disruption of their comfy culture both as cosmopolitans and journalists. But I think most of it is because Trump keeps feeding them story after story, all of which are much more interesting than snowflakes. I'm not at all sure that it's fair to say that "newspapers are choosing to downplay..." That's like saying a quarterback is choosing to be sacked. Don't forget that we wouldn't be having these demonstrations were it not for Trump's antics in which case the media could be spending time on campus free speech. Now, with everybody aroused and out demonstrating, there's no way in hell that anyone is going to be able to reel in the problem you bring up. BT there were avenues of appeal to the campuses. Now they're on steroids. And the media are swamped.
