The adjustments did have an impact on making 2014 & 2015 the hottest years ever. But this is arguing tenths of a degree. The largest adjustments occurred in the past (pre-2000), especially getting rid of the cooling from 1940-1970's.

The further in the past one goes, the more holes need to be filled in to compute the global temperature data. These holes were filled in with a model of choice, primarily MAGICC.

Pre-1950, 90+% of the Earth's surface was a "hole" filled in with the model (basically U.S. and Europe measured temperature with select ports around the world, that was it). Global temperature before 1950 is basically made up with a model aptly named MAGICC.
