Understood, trade offs are important to keep track of. However, what everyone forgets is that we have to finance our twin deficits with very real debt. That debt carries interest, which costs the American taxpayer hundreds of billions per year. If we close the trade deficit, the more money stays here in the US, which we can use to invest or pay down debt. Ultimately, the more we allow incentive structures to encourage giving away our wealth, the poorer we become. It's really not all that complicated.
