Exactech Granted New Patent For Orthopaedic Bone
Cutting Guide

GAINESVILLE, Fla., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Exactech, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXAC - news) said today the company has been granted a patent for an orthopaedic bone cutting guide that significantly facilitates certain knee reconstructive surgery. The official effective date was Nov. 18, 1997.

The company said the U. S. Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks granted Patent Number 5,688,281 entitled ''Intramedullary Alignment Guide'' to two Exactech employees, Phil Cripe and C. Michael Mauldin with Exactech, Inc. as the assignee. The guide facilitates the reparation of precise bone cuts for implantation of the company's Optetrak(R) knee system femoral components. With the new easy to use adjustment method, an operating surgeon can quickly and accurately
attach a cutting guide block to a thigh bone with a single instrument. The device includes a sighting tool that facilitates accurate alignment of the prosthesis.

Dr. Bill Petty, chairman and CEO of Exactech, said, ''This innovative guide is an important improvement over cumbersome and time consuming techniques currently used by other companies to deal with anatomic variations customary in knee reconstructive surgery. This new nstrument will permit our surgeons to accomplish the task with a single instrument. This significantly reduces the need for costly additional instrumentation and streamlines the surgical procedure while at the same time adding precision and accuracy to the process.''

Based in Gainesville, Fla., Exactech develops, manufactures and markets orthopaedic implant devices and related surgical instruments to hospitals and physicians. The company's orthopaedic implant devices are used to replace joints which have deteriorated as a result of injury or diseases such as arthritis.

Exactech contracts with independent sales agents to market its products in the United States and in nine countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
