My basis for this was the many evaluations put forth by the posters on this thread since August comparing the "gray market" values of the UMC stock relative to the US dollar. In addition, it was also confirmed by the Plillips sale of some of their investment fab stock during the summer. (Not involved with UMC). 15X original investment.

The investment has been making a very good return from a quarterly earnings standpoint. In addition, UMC ramped up production 50% after the UICC fire which will further increase quarterly operating profits. Those extra profits will just start showing up during 1st quarter. Why give that that up before an impending IPO?

This company has something planned for that cash, something that can't wait, and something that normal banks wouldn't (can't?) loan on.
