His setup has yoke and pedals but the pc box is 8 or 9 years old and long since reached its maximum potential. I'm impressed it's lasted this long but he takes care of things and my advice was to run that system into the ground if he's on the fence about spending on a new system. More likely, if this project works I'd give it to him and let him pay for second gpu.
Well, the HP Z420 arrived today, that was fast. Below is a picture of the inside, looks in excellent cosmetic condition. I already ordered 64gb of ram (used, of course, old server pulls) and an extra ram cooler but that will take a bit longer to arrive. I have to do more research on a decent value high performance gpu or pair of gpus, but the original 600w power supply has two six(6) pin connectors. Supposedly there are some newer 8 pin video cards that will work on 6 pin but many will not. There is a pin adapter that works for some people and not others, as well as replacing psu but I'm looking to do this as cheaply to build to start with best performance so would prefer the best one or two gpus that work on the two original 6 pin. Will probably boot up first time on Saturday or Sunday.
I've read that win10 on first install registers the hardware. So instead cloning 250gb hdd to 1tb ssd, upon first use of win10 will create a boot/emergency disk to flash drive through the window media creation tool. And then my hope is clean install win10 to my spare new ssd. Have never done that before so looking forward to try. Did the free win10 upgrade on some machines, not all, and reverted to win7 pro on my main laptop.
