Agreed about possibly too few watts for newest dual gpus. It doesn't need bleeding edge but for stability a decent margin of error over is best. Maybe 1000w+ will be needed down the road and the key imo will be matching new psu to original pin connector to motherboard. The number escapes me but z420 has an oddball psu to mobo pin count. These are some of the quirks that go into proprietary builds but usually there's a deep used parts market on ebay and elsewhere and workarounds for other snafus. And as the saying goes... your mileage may vary.

My hope is if this goes well the next project will be a dual xeon cpu workstation for personal use sourced through similar methods. If only I could piece together my laptops like this!
