The reality is much different. ocean.dmi.dk Back in 2008, much of the Arctic basin had ice less than a meter thick, notably in the Beaufort, Chukchi and East Siberian Seas. Now the same regions mostly have ice that is at least two meters thick, and some over four meters. The only area which had substantial thick ice in 2008 was to the north of Greenland. All of this was washed out of the Arctic through the Fram strait a few months later.
