Longtime CIA Analyst Resigns, Writes Op-Ed Slamming Trump Administration February 21, 2017Carolina Chávez US
‘Because Of Trump I Quit The CIA’
Edward Price, a former analyst at the CIA for the last decade and spokesman for the National Security Council (NSC), explained to The Washington Post that he chose to leave his career at the agency because of Trump. In a revealing article he wrote for the paper, Price explains in detail his long journey inside the Central Intelligence Agency which began nearly 15 years ago. As a college student convinced that the agency was the ideal place to serve the country, Price was sure he would make a life-long career out of it. “Once CIA, always CIA,” his father used to say. But everything changed under the new administration. As he said:
“That changed when I formally resigned last week. Despite working proudly for Republican and Democratic presidents, I reluctantly concluded that I cannot in good faith serve this administration as an intelligence professional.”
Price was an expert in terrorist groups; he traveled the world as an analyst to help deter and disrupt terrorist attacks. During both the George W. Bush and Obama’s administrations, his work had some influence in shaping policies. However, Donald Trump’s rhetoric and his abysmally different approach to intelligence raised serious questions for Price.

During the presidential race, Trump doubted the information of 17 U.S. intelligence agencies in regards to the hacking of DNC emails, and constantly discredited the reliability of the agency because of the 2002 assessment of Iraq’s weapons program (despite the fact that he supported the invasion). Now in office, his actions have been much more disturbing. Starting with his first visit to the CIA headquarters in which he used the moment for personal promotion instead of addressing those present, the contrast between him and the previous U.S. leader was huge and not positive. Just a couple of weeks ago, the White House issued a directive to reorganize the NSC and the Homeland Security Council.
Price’s decision is, nonetheless, unrelated to politics; his dedication to serve the country answers to Democrats and Republicans alike. But this administration has changed the course of everything; it works different than any previous administration. As he explains:
“It has little need for intelligence professionals who, in speaking truth to power, might challenge the so-called “America First” orthodoxy that sees Russia as an ally and Australia as a punching bag. That’s why the president’s trusted White House advisers, not career professionals, reportedly have final say over what intelligence reaches his desk.” U.S. President Donald Trump has not only changed the course of things and altered U.S. foreign policy in every possible way. He has disregarded what intelligence agencies and what intelligence professionals, men and women, who dedicate entirely and selflessly to serve their country have to say -“sometimes at the risk of life or limb”. And until things change once again, the work of Price as of many others as intelligence professionals seems entirely useless. |
