On a slightly more serious note, I think Java probably won't do much in the end-user app market for a while because the bandwidth is just not there. Why run Java at 28,800 bps when you can waste 266Mhz Pentium II's on Office 97? Last I checked, the prices of 266Mhz Pentiums, which come w/ MS Office 97 "free", are dropping faster than the Korea Won. However, before you start foaming and liken me to Micrsoft pondscum, I think Java does currently have promise in the business world, especially for those people who can figure out how to utilize the telecomm upstarts such as Quest Communication's spanking brand new high bandwidth fiber lines.
Personally I would like to write a Java-based actuarial insurance modeling program that takes advantage of clustering and multi-processing, but that's for another lifetime... |
