I think that Elvis heading off to do movies was based on what the earlier superstar's of song had done.

Bing Crosby had 5 of the top 10 songs in the early 1930's and was had super strong record sales in the 1930's... he was wildly popular as was Frank Sinatra a decade or so after that....

Sinatra's career was said to be revived when he was cast in the huge hit movie "From Here to Eternity"

I take it that Elvis and his manager looked at what the others had done and gravitated to movies. The music of the early '60's was pretty insipid and sugary..... and I agree ....there was a huge vacuum.
