Just a little story- happened to us- just shows how this admin is ratcheting up the tension between the races. We were eating a brunch with our daughter at a pretty nice restaurant in Davis- we were talking about alligators, of all things, when a young woman at the bar, who was drinking alone and pretty heavily, turned around and said to my husband- "Are you a racist?" I thought I'd heard her wrong, and so did my husband, so I said, "Excuse me?" And she repeated herself. I was nonplussed, for a second- but my daughter, always a pretty mouthy person, said, "I am biracial- so of course he isn't racist." At which point she looks at me, and says, "Well it's obvious you're not." Presumably because I look like a light skinned Hispanic (and I am part Hispanic, and part American Indian- and my kids are part black, from their father's side)- so it's true that my kids are multi-ethnic- not just biracial- even though they look white. But we were nice about it- and she eventually told us she's from El Salvador (legal- she stressed) and her mother had been the target of death squads- got some background on that- and the new intolerance toward minorities was clearly taking a toll on her and her family (some rambling here- but had something to do with immigration tensions). We wished her well as we left- but it made me realize how tense everyone is right now about race. And idiots on the right said Obama made racial tensions worse- well let me tell you, I've never seen people as tense as they are now. This thing in Kansas, just seems par for the course. If a Muslim had killed a couple people in a bar, immediately Scrotus and his whole pack of idiots would blame the entire Muslim religion and every Muslim on the planet- but because it's a racist white guy, nothing to see here, move along...
I don't know what's coming down the road- but I know that never before this administration has my husband been called a racist for simply eating brunch at his own table. |
