Received and installed the 64gb of ram (Samsung pc3-12800r ddr3-1600, 8gb x 8) on the Z420. It's running smoothly so far! The third party ram cooler fan I bought can not be properly mounted. Someone on the forum where I saw the deal mentioned overheating on the second bay of ram slots and linked to a g.skill product which I preemptively bought. Perhaps a $12 mistake, oh well. Will have to research for a fan that can be properly mounted and there's not a lot of room as the cpu fan is between the two banks of slots.

I ran novabench and passmark again. The extra ram definitely raises the scores a bit but for my intent this project is complete now. In theory I could upgrade the xeon to an 8 core (unsure if that's the limit) for a 15-20% bump and a used cpu might be had for $50-60 on sale but as of now don't really need it. I'm pretty satisfied with the result for the cost and would be interested if the dual cpu HP Z series workstation ever get cheap on a refurb deal.
