Nissan- Renault says it expects to be shipping fully autonomous vehicles within the next three years.

The comments were made by the firms VP of connected vehicles and mobility services Ogi Redzic, during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which kicked-off this week.

Redzic, who has held senior positions at Nokia, NAVTEQ and Motorola before joining the Nissan-Renault Alliance in January last year.

Speaking to Mobile World Live, he said the firm is working hard on developing and building its AI strategy but is confident it can have 10 vehicle models ready by this time. Regulation however could remain an obstacle in achieving its target of having these vehicles deployed, but the technology he insists will have been achieved.

He added that by 2025, all new cars will be manufactured and shipped with connected capabilities.

“What we do expect is that the first fully driverless cars will be used in fleets in limited areas, both for so-called ‘robo-taxis’ and for delivery services,” said Redzic.

Redzic also noted the importance of stable and reliable internet connectivity for autonomous vehicles as a market to excel and achieve its ambitions.

“The mobile industry is a key element of the interconnection between the car and the ecosystem. Connected cars, autonomous-drive cars and the future of mobility will require stable broadband data connections at an affordable price.”
