The lightening connector was our bridge between the 30 pin and the USB-C connector. Lightening was a useful bridge, an elegant upgrade from the 30 pin connector, and the basis for the USB-C standard. I'm grateful to have had it for the last 4 years while the industry worked out the very similar USB-C standard. There's no reason for Apple not to transition to the USB-C standard, now that it's here. Would you have rather had another 4 years of the 30 pin, or do you recognize the benefits of having had the lightening connector in the interim? To me it seems like a pretty straightforward concept; connectors evolve.
