I was wondering the same, but according to the USB-C Wikipedia entry, the spec was only finalized in August of 2014. That's two years after Apple moved to the Lightning connector.

I agree that proprietary interfaces are bad, but if you believe Apple and Tim Cook, they had no choice at the time given the functionality they wanted from the connector.

I was so glad when Apple dumped NuBus and ADB in the 90's and adopted industry standard PCI and USB, for example. Same thing with moving to Intel processors and sticking a fork in the PowerPC architecture.
