Thanks for the articles on the S. Korean situation.

I thought the first article was pretty informative. I'm interested
in who the four biggest chaebol are (mentioned in the article). I
wouldn't be surprised if Samsung, LG Semicon or Hyudai was one of them.

Like the article said -- President Kim has his work
cut out for him trying to break up some of the power of the
chaebol, but he's got a better shot at it than the outgoing
president and any of the other candidates did. I don't see how
S. Korea can become more competitive without eroding the
chaebol's power. Companies can't be allowed to use politcal
power to keep going if they're not able to compete. One of
the DRAM makers had a debt equity ratio of over 400% and the
best of the three had a debt equity ratio of over 200% and
they were planning to get started on two new fabs (until the
crisis) which I bet involved more debt. In a truly competitive market, that wouldn't happen.

Since the second article was somewhat slanted against the IMF, I
may try to get a second source. I admit I don't
really know too much about the IMF's policies except what I've
heard on TV, such as less regulation/manipulation of the market,
and allowing more foreign investment, which seems aimed at
increasing competition.

Anyway -- on a brighter note -- I'm very glad to see TI move
up to the #4 spot from #6 last year, all that in spite of
dram. Not bad.

Regards,
Angela
