The first time I heard Elizabeth Warren, she was speaking at women's club or something and talked about how people were basically sold a bill of goods regarding that two income family. They end up with two cars, a bigger house, more obligations including child care, and if ONE of the two loses a job, they can go under.

While the 1-income family has no child care, one car, usually a smaller house, and of the wage earner loses his or her job, it's easier for the other person to enter the workforce to help smooth things over.

Kids get a better deal, imo, and the family has less stress and less worry.

And when my wife and I had a kid together, I ran the numbers suggested my wife drop her hours, I overloaded my hours during the week to create one half-day, and voila, no child care. After tax... it was about a wash. But far less stressful and much simpler to manage. And if my job went away, she could increase to full time and no worries.
