In my opinion we should adopt something like Canada has. Many of we liberals were pretty upset that Obama took single-payer off the table before he even started negotiating. I have written several state plans, and always used other plans to get ideas from.

If we were intelligent, we would take the many universal healthcare systems in the Democratic Western world and put something together based on their successes and failures.

But what we have going on here, is that the medical industry is designing our plans for their profit and wants to maximize their profits and the Republicans keep giving us these terrible medical plans so they can do so. Remember George Bush made it illegal to import drugs from Canada and for Medicare to negotiate prices for drugs.

So it isn't that we can't put together affordable systems, it's that the medical industry and big Pharma has so much power that they are able to get the Republicans to do stuff that's in their best interest.

In fact a good case can be made that medical care is not something that should have a profit, per se, or maybe a controlled profit like we do with other utilities. I think it is insane that a large percentage of our country does not have medical insurance. I have many friends without medical insurance and watch them time and again not go to the doctor's office when they need to. A while back I had a friend that had blood poisoning and refused to go to the hospital and right now I've got a friend that has pneumonia and refuses to go, both times because they have no medical insurance which is nuts.
