Do you think that without a profit motive we'd have MRI & CT Scans? Life-saving drugs? Modern medical facilities and surgical implants?

You are dreaming if you think those things happen without profit motive. They don't and they wouldn't. It is profit motive AND NOTHING ELSE that causes investors to take risks with their money. Government bureaucrats may be able to carve out money for a few of these things (like for the NASA moon shot), but they're not going to be able to do that on a day in, day out basis.

You may want to take a look at health care in North Korea and Cuba (not Mike Moore's Cuba, but the REAL Cuban health care system) for examples of what you're talking about.
