Well--I appreciate what you're saying Patrick, having encountered the attitude you describe myself, although in fairness, when I was there again with my sons, and my 12 was attempting to speak French in restaurants and stores, the waiters and clerks were very kind and patient with him. But as for your "for all you know" statement--I know a great deal as my husband was speaking at this conference, it was given by a major American airline and was made up of American travel agents. So whatever his "agenda", this person was perceived as ignorant.

In our refusal to competently teach or seriously study other languages, and our expectation that everyone else should understand English, we are at least as arrogant as the French.
