GG I prefer economics to true-believer analysis. Should I replace Camry with Nissan Leaf?
stuff.co.nz That's one problem = no new Leaf available in NZ now. But if it was = NZ$40,000.

They are apparently available used imported for about NZ$20,000 3 years old which is the way I'd go probably.

Suppose I keep the reliable old Camry for another 10 years. That $20,000 would buy me fuel for that time.

The electricity during those 10 years would not be free. Nor would the inconvenience of it when driving out of charger range. Having TWO cars on site would be annoying, using up shed space that is insufficient for two and also costing car registration and warrant of fitness each year [plus the waste of time getting that done].

So if I stay as I am, for no hassle, I get 10 years for $20,000.

If I go Leaf alone, I get 10 years for $20,000 [assuming depreciation to Camry value in those 10 years which seems likely]. But I get a lot of hassle with the Leaf and have to pay that $20,000 up front = big opportunity cost [can invest that $20,000 much better]. Where will I recharge in all the places I go? Range anxiety!! No 7SSS stations en route. Hopeless.

I think I'll wait a few years for some more technological developments. The Camry should get me through to Uberized autopilot cars enabling me to not have a car at all!! That will suit me much better.

Turning the shed into an accommodation block would reap $200,000 capital gain [untaxed in NZ]. Especially if excavating for a basement and going up to two storeys. Heck, that would be a $1 million capital gain. Looks like it's time to bulldoze the whole section and dig out a basement and go up, creating multiple accommodations.

Land in central Auckland is something like NZ$1 million for 500 m2 = NZ$2,000 per m2. A car takes up about 12 m2 = NZ$25,000 just for the land. Plus a building to keep the rain off.

Annual registration = NZ$200
WOF = NZ$100 per year plus hassles
10 years = another $3,000

I don't bother with insurance so won't claim that.

Having two cars is hopeless. Having even 1 in 10 years might be very questionable. Handing over $20,000 right now for no advantage is not my idea of fun. But thanks for the suggestion.

Nissan has ditched the Leaf in NZ so I'm not the only one who can do arithmetic.

Retail electricity is NZ30c per kw-hour. << 8 cents a KWHR beats $ 2 litre gas >> Petrol here is NZ$2 per litre. Even with free electricity it wouldn't make sense. How many kw-hours per litre are there?
