John, I have 4 unscientific answers for you.

1. If the coastal cities are heavily populated there is also a lot of tax revenue concentrated over a small area, the high density of the population per square mile generates a lot of problems therefore those cities are quicker to implement various aspects what is generally called "Smart Cities" to solve problems arising from population density problems and give the impression of higher quality of life. Why should a small hamlet in a beautiful setting in Riverton Wyoming need all the bells and whistle of NYC?

2. Usually densely populated area has also a big pool of professional talent, which is sought after by big corporations, and therefore they are usually setting their headquarters in those densely populated cities

3. Humans are social creatures, very curious (just see a congress of baboons) and like to stick their nose where it does not belong otherwise called gossip and intrigue. With the big cities and corporation comes the gossip intrigue and all the other ills of social behavior where on earth can you find a better place to practice those anti social behaviors? Except in a well kept restaurant that his chef knows how to transform the restaurant in a symbol of status, and where all kind of trolls want to be seen spending time there, with who and who.

4. and the last one in your efforts to find a theoretical "best" mate to marry, the densely populated cities offers you so many choice that your head is spinning, and your animal instincts thrives you to chose the best mate in your imagination that you think would bring to life your best of offspring's. ... which is a total BS based on the number of unhappy couples and failed kids sold to drugs, which rarely would happen in a place like Riverton Wyoming just as an example.

Of course this makes very little sense based on the high percentage of divorces, firings from your dream job, high shelter prices, and all the other inconveniences but as it is people are very average and not exactly too smart.
