I suspect bypass surgery is also routine. I remember reading about 20 years ago about how major heart surgery in the 60s was freakin' expensive. But as it became more and more routine, the price stayed sky high. and the surgeons annual winnings went from well paid to obscene.

There's a reason why a few surgeons here in Seattle have created single year billings that exceed 50 million dollars. And with crap care to go along with it. This was all exposed in an investigative article in the Seattle Times a few weeks ago. The surgeon behind the big ravenous push resigned to slink away. He had 86 million dollars of billings in a single year, often "performing" three or four major surgeries... simultaneously!

The CEO of the hospital resigned last week. The population awakened to the reality that their crap hospital, the dominant one in Seattle, is just a money generating machine. They have long been the most expensive hospital system in the region, and now people know what the quality is like, too.
