a few years ago I had a visit to the ER for a broken collarbone, beyond an x-ray and a sling, there wasn't much else to do for me. When the hospital submitted my health insurance information, it was rejected as not being a policy holder (they used the correct policy #, but submitted it to the wrong insurer)..... not realizing their error, they then unleashed the chargemaster on me.. I received a very detailed billing, including a couple of body scans, IV fluids, a team to set a dislocated shoulder (which I didn't have), etc... it all came to just short of $15,000.

Once my proper insurer was contacted, I let them know what were the bs charges, and when the insurer wouldn't pay for them, the hospital continued to try for years to get me to pay for them! They hounded me until I told them I was hiring an attorney and planned to sue.
