I'm seldom arrogant or argumentative (am actually a little pleased that you perceived me that way)but I'll stand by my statement that Americans who travel abroad in general expect English to be spoken. I'll modify my statement to say that the expectation has an understandable basis in fact as Europeans do study English in their schools and frequently do speak it functionally. To become indignant or offended if it's not spoken, though, is arrogant. Rather, we should be apologetic that we aren't able to speak their language. Is that better?
