"The true story from which this story was adapted took place in 1841. This film was made in 1975 and was set in the modern times of that day. In one other version of this story, as soon as the typhoon abated, the survivors hailed the man in charge to be a glorious hero. Then, when a boat was seen heading towards them for a rescue, each of the survivors started accusing him as a devil who had murdered those he sent away to their deaths. I saw that movie when I was a young man and it made me realize how hopelessly pathetic the human race truly is."
