I did not take it as an accusation. Merely suggested you reread. <g> But apparently that did not work. Fine. From the top:
But most people can understand [that] we can't just continue to buy things on the national Amex card from now on.
My post disagreed with that--"that" being the main clause of the statement, which reads "most people can understand [that]." I called it a myth. Perhaps that label is not quite as apt as it seemed when I wrote it. But we all tend to believe that other people should understand what seems clear to us.

As explanation for my position I offered:

One is that money grows on trees. The other is that the one-percenters and corporations have enough to support the whole country if they'd just quit being so greedy and willing to share. I don't see any messaging from the right to disabuse anyone of either of those notions. Not that those messages are typically well received even if they existed. They just reinforce the greed/share myth.
So, if you believe that they can understand [that], please suggest how you think they might come to that understanding. They seem to me to be pretty dug into their own understanding.
