Is ironic places like Manhattan were quite affordable as recently as 35 years ago yet had everything you describe and much much more prior to technology explosion and fed ZIRP policies. The choice to me isn't really just a NYC vs small towns. Mid sized towns 250k-1M most of which I have been to have a lot going for them these days. Other now larger 2M+ fast growing metro's like Austin, Raleigh, Orlando and SLC becoming expensive now as well but of course look cheap compared to NYC.. Seems from all I read most who aren't already rich and need to make a living but don't have stock options in a Facebook or Goldman Sachs do dislike living in SF or NYC and can't wait to one day leave whether is the dream house in the exhurbs or moving to FL, AZ, TX or NC
