Somewhere in my travels today I ran across a piece suggesting possible program modifications and one was to add a work requirement to Medicaid. My memory can come up with no further context for that.

But Google came to the rescue. Sort of. Didn't present any immediate source of background on the basis for the requirement.

The committee voted along party lines for a pair of motions supporting additional cuts to Medicaid beyond what's in the bill - and for a third motion endorsing a requirement that "able-bodied" participants in the program work in exchange for their benefits. Conservatives have championed these ideas.
That's the House Budget Committee. chicagotribune.com
