I will be interesting to see how these 770k are spread in geography and across income levels.

What I know as fact is that, during the 80s recessions, the market was normal for high end properties. There is always buyers for a high end properties either economy is doing well or doing badly.

I believe during this down trun that lasted 6 years, the high end market operated normally.

Let me dig in.

Let me tell you an anedote evidence. My former tenant, (was in construction of multi dweller units, credit available his company was doing well. Starting 2013 he felt the pinch. Moved out by 2014 for a cheaper property.

My social experiment:

As he and his wife are my friends on Facebook, just to chronic his life through the down turn I followed them, once in a while, for 2 years.

First no more trips to the beach. No lavish Birthday parties for the twin kids. No more big barbecues with family. (They are from italian and German/Polish descendancy and like to socialize among family).

Lots of Irate postings against Dilma Roussef (the impeached president) former president Lula...

His wife opened a coffeeshop. HUsband posted an add selling his pick truck. More irate postings venting anger at government.

This Summer (south hemisphere Summer) they are back at the beach. More family barbecues. No more irate postings against the government. I said to myself. Brazilian economy is improving.
