Expand your thinking just a little. Manufacturing cost is $2-$5 to upgrade to a case that has 3 or 4 external bays. Compare that to the premium it will cost to have the Sony name on a device that will have a manufacturing cost that is as much as the combined total of the Zip, CD-r, and floppy.

After spending the same money, what do you have? A machine without a CD, a single device that only allows you to use one media at a time, the inherent reliability problems of multifunction devices, and a machine that can not read the industry standard Zip.
