I think that Hitachi, Toshiba, and Samsung all make DVD drives that read CD-R media. Samsung built the first one, for what it's worth. Compaq is using the old DVD drives and software decode because they're cheaper (probably less than $50 savings).

Now HP should know better -- let's work on finding out which decoder it uses.
