T.R., as far as I am concerned, (almost) anyone here can respond to my posts, as long as they reply civilly.
However, I am not sure exactly what you are saying about it. Is it somehow inapproprate to name a predominantly white school after a black leader? This is a new school, so it doesn't involve renaming anything, which is a slightly different issue. Should only mostly black institutions be named after King? Is he really a hero? Are these parents racist, even though they claim they are not?
My reaction to the article was confusing to me. First I was just sad that there is so much racial divisiveness in America. Then, as a mother who would do almost anything to protect the academic interests of her college-bound child, I wondered how I would feel if it affected me directly. I think one of the things that occurred to me is that because almost all things that are named after Martin Luther King are in black ghettos, it IS becoming a negative. I know that if I were in a strange city, I would tend to stay away from Martin Luther King Way, for example. If there is general agreement that he should be honored, perhaps more stuff in nice middle-class white neigborhoods should be named after him, but is there any agreement at all?
So I just was curious to see how other people here would react, as well.
