A major argument in the oil industry was the old chicken and egg problem. That applied to CNG, LPG, methanol and other ideas such as octane number, whatever. Car makers wouldn't produce vehicles unless infrastructure was available and infrastructure wouldn't be built until vehicles were available to use the new thing.

I never bought the chicken and egg argument because there's always a few places that can use the new thing, such as local fleets, golf carts or whatever. If there is a big technological or economic advantage, the chickens pretty soon start flocking to the new thing.

Electric cars are gaining economies of scale but they aren't there yet. This time, it looks as though they should win. I thought 30 years ago that they were set to go, but they were not and they still have minuscule market share but the Prius, Leaf and many others are making excellent inroads. Gasoline and diesel engine technology made amazing gains over those 30 years and held the line!
