Breaking News -The Justice department has an active criminal investigation underway into three core areas exposed by the surveillance and unmasking of Donald Trump and his associates.

The unmasking and leaking of surveillance is a crime.

The unauthorized surveillance of a Presidential candidate is a crime.

The passing on of data gained from such surveillance to the Hillary Clinton campaign is also a crime.

Here is where the investigation stands. The justice department has known for some time that Susan Rice ordered surveillance of Candidate Trump, and unmasked the data. Investigators are actively working to identify those around her who actually leaked to the press.

Immunity is being offered to lower lever operatives who participated in the illegal surveillance and unmasking/leaking to identify those higher ups who ordered it.

As this is a criminal investigation, there are fairly high standards from which the investigators must operate from.

The leaking of surveillance data to the Clinton camp was prolific and took place over the period of the Trump candidacy.

The Whitehouse is not saying much at present due to the criminal nature of the inquiry.

The links between certain journalists and leakers is also being investigated with a view to potential charges in that area as well but charging journalists is not a priority.

As one official told me, "we are rolling up the network quite rapidly and expect to be laying criminal charges against many individuals over the course of the next few weeks and months." I have also been told this investigation, code named "Nightingale", is entirely separate and compartmentalized from any ongoing Russia investigations.
